4 Steps To Conducting A Job Risk Analysis

Step 1 – Select the job to be analysed
Consider
· Frequency of accidents / injuries and near misses
· Rate of disability injuries
· Severity of potential consequences
· New or modified job
Remember - Jobs should not be selected at random!

Step 2 - Break the job down into steps
· Select an employee to observe
· Brief the employee on the purpose and procedure of the JHA
· Observe the task being performed
· Record each step in the breakdown
· Check the breakdown with the employee
Step 3 – Identify hazards and potential causes
· Use a structured line of questioning and brainstorming
· Identify all existing and potential causes
· Check the list against the workers experience on the job

Step 4 – Develop solutions and controls
· Document that existing control measures are adequate OR
A Modify the job procedure
B Change the conditions that are creating the hazard
C Decrease the frequency
· Check recommendations with workers performing the job
