ISO 17025

Picture
In plain English, it’s about proving two things:
- your lab is **competent** (people, methods, equipment)
- your results are **reliable and traceable** (so customers can trust the numbers)

If you test, measure, calibrate, sample, or issue results that clients rely on, ISO 17025 is the gold standard.

What ISO 17025 actually is (no jargon)
ISO 17025 is a management system for labs, but it’s more practical than people expect.

It focuses on:
- impartiality and confidentiality
- competence of staff
- valid methods and controlled processes
- equipment control and calibration
- measurement traceability
- quality control and assurance of results
- clear reporting
- audits, corrective actions, continual improvement

It’s not about writing a policy and hoping for the best, It’s about controlling what affects results.

Who ISO 17025 is for
ISO 17025 is for organisations that provide:
- testing services
- calibration services
- sampling (where it affects the validity of results)

This could include in-house labs, independent labs, and labs within larger organisations.

Why businesses implement ISO 17025
1) Credibility and trust, Clients want proof your results are accurate and repeatable.

2) Reduced risk and fewer disputes
When methods, traceability and reporting are controlled, challenges are easier to defend.

3) Better consistency
You reduce variation caused by people, equipment, environment, and process drift.

4) Stronger tender and supply chain position, Many buyers prefer or require ISO 17025 for labs.

What you need to pass ISO 17025
You don’t need a mountain of paperwork. You need a controlled system and evidence.

Typically you’ll need:
- defined scope of activities (tests/calibrations)
- impartiality and confidentiality controls
- competence records (training, authorisations)
- method control (approved methods, validation/verification)
- equipment register, calibration and maintenance records
- environmental controls (where relevant)
- measurement traceability evidence
- quality control activities (e.g., proficiency testing, replicates,
control charts)
- handling of nonconforming work
- internal audits, management review, corrective actions

What makes ISO 17025 audits fail
Common nonconformities include:
- methods not validated/verified properly
- equipment calibration gaps or poor traceability
- unclear authorisation/competence for staff
- weak quality control (no trend monitoring)
- reports missing key information or not controlled

The fix: keep everything traceable, and make sure the evidence matches what you say you do.
